Suriname is one of the most vibrant and dynamic societies in the world. The country’s population is of distinct ethnicities. There is an assortment of cultures in Suriname that generates friendship between neighbors of varying backgrounds, while preserving the separate identities of different groups.

Nowadays there are many ethnic groups in Suriname, however, the main five (5) ethnic groups of Suriname are: 

1) Amerindians

They were the first inhabitants of Suriname.

2) Hindustani 

A population group in Suriname whose ancestors are of Indian descent. The Hindustani, also known as East Indians arrived in Suriname in 1873 as indentured laborers on the plantations.

3) Creole 

A population group in Suriname whose ancestors are of African descent.

4)Marron

A population group in Suriname  with African descents.

5) Chinese 

A population in Suriname whose ancestors are from Asian descent.

5) Javanese

A population group in Suriname whose ancestors are from Asian decent. Most Javanese in Suriname came from Indonesia.
